Overview

The DPS-V77 comes from Sony’s professional audio division — the same organisation that produced broadcast mixing consoles and DAT machines. It’s a multi-effects processor covering reverb, delay, pitch shifting, chorus, flanger, and various combinations, built to a quality standard above what typical project studio gear of the era offered.

Sony’s reverb algorithms have a characteristic smoothness and density. The unit’s professional DNA shows in the detail: balanced I/O, solid construction, and a clean signal path. MIDI control allows program changes and parameter automation.

The DPS-V77 is not particularly well-known today — Sony’s pro audio division was always somewhat under the radar compared to Lexicon, Eventide, or Roland — but units that have been looked after perform very well and reward the curious.

My unit

I found it in Oct 2021 racked on a huge tv/monitors/console table ready to be trashed away with some old stuff. I took it home, it powered on but didn’t work properly. It showed gibberish on the screen. It was my first time with small fixes, the device just needed a new battery. I soldered a battery socket, put a new battery on and performed a good reset. That was it.

I have read that it was meant to beat some really good gear on the market but it was a bad timing when it was released and they were not that lucky. And Sony later didn’t show interest in continuing that kind of devices. So it seams that it is a great piece. I haven’t used it that much so far. It’s in my future plans.
